Barry Sheene
Memorial Ride
October 1st- 2nd 2008
By Brian Burling
I have just got out of the shower..... so am typing this in the
nude...... now now ladies.... calm down, there isn't much to get excited
about......
My first Barry Sheene Ride started from Baxter at 8.30am along with
about twenty-two bikes and twenty-eight happy people on board. The
weather was perfect. Ron lead us along the Sth Gippy Hwy to the Lang
Lang turn off and on to Korrumburra, Leongatha and then to Foster for a
wee stop ( thats Scottish for the little boys room). No doubt the ladies
"powdered their noses" also. We met up with John and Kevin who were
enjoying some bakery delights, so we joined them. Before leaving Foster,
one of the Honda ST's had battery problems... not saying who..... but
Geraldine sits on the back seat. Mick's Kwaka came to rescue with a jump
start and we were off to Sale. We had a short break at a servo in Sale,
where Trevor's Yamaha was used to help the Honda ST fire up. We were off
to Bairnsdale via Bengworden and Perry Bridge, arriving at the caravan
park mid afternoon. We were due to jump on a bus at 5.15pm for a nite at
the RSL, so we just had nibblies and dwinkies until the bus came.
A little hick-up on arriving at the RSL..... we didn't have a
reservation.... ( Macca's here we come)... but Ron sorted out the
drama... we were down as Melbourne Ulysses ???
A great meal and a FEW sips were enjoyed whilst the band drowned out all
conversation. An auction of motorcycle memor...memmo... STUFF saw huge
amounts of money change hands.
It was a fun nite ending with a bus trip back to the units. I will let
you imagine what took place overnight, before departing early to join
the masses at the "starting gate" at the local oval.
More great weather helped us endure the lengthy wait for the 10.00am
start. We guessed about 600 or so bikes, led by the police, headed down
the Hwy thru Sale and into Morwell for a lunch stop. I was amazed at how
many people came out to wave.... even some in wheelchairs.
From Morwell we went thru Leongatha and Wonthaggi and a few of us
stopped in San Remo, whilst most of our group headed up the Hwy towards
home.
I wanted to ride the GP track and as it turned out, so did five more Two
Bays members.
Gary kept telling me before we did our "hot lap" to join the back of the
pack. We did and it was great to be able to twist the throttle just a
tad before catching the "slow" bunch. I waved back at the track
marshalls, not realizing their wave meant SLOW DOWN. The lap was over
very quickly, but it was great.
Six of us met up at Grantville so we could ride home together.
Many thanks to Ron for all his hard work and thanks also go to the Two
Bays members who made this a most enjoyable trip.
Thanks to Ron, Wolfy, Doug,
Tiny and Mick for the photos
